David Popper Experience #15/40 - Sebastian Diezig, cello
www.SebastianDiezig.com - I have nothing smart to say right now about this etude except that I found it a pretty hard one. The double stops in the end are nasty.

www.SebastianDiezig.com The 14th etude in David Popper's High School book is all about staccato. It’s a tough one.

www.SebastianDiezig.com - In this difficult Etude I feel that it is important to take care not only of the intonation but equally well of the sound quality and musical expression. Also I feel it can’t be too slow because otherwise it will sound like the exercise it actually is.

www.SebastianDiezig.com - I am back! To me this is feels like one of the most difficult etudes I have ever worked on. Really uncomfortable with lots of shifts, but also uneasy string crossing work in awkward positions. The ridiculous octaves in the end are also worth mentioning. Even bowing-wise it is demanding because one should play with nice legato and good sound.

www.SebastianDiezig.com - This 11th Popper Etude is one of the easier ones in the book. What took time though was memorizing it. It probably has to do with the many similar sequences that chromatically move up or down half a tone as they are repeated and some other small details like constant jumping across all the strings. I think the goal in this etude is to produce a clean sound with as litt...

www.SebastianDiezig.com - There are harder Etudes in Popper's High School book, but No. 10 still turned out to be more delicate than I initially thought. Among the intricacies are the many arpeggios, the frequent use of intermediate positions (2nd, 3rd) without being able to slide into them (hitting them right consistently is quite a job), two dangerous downward shifts in thumb positions and an...

I. Allegro moderato 00:00 II. Scherzo: Allegro 08:38 III. Notturno: Andante 13:50 IV. Finale: Andante-Vivace 21:01 Alexander Borodin wrote his String Quartet No. 2 in D major during a summer vacation in 1881 while staying in Zhitovo, southeast of Moscow, at the estate of his friend, composer Nikolai Lodyzhensky. He dedicated it to his wife Ekaterina Protopova. Borodin was a composer only in his...

www.SebastianDiezig.com - This one is definitely a very hard one, and it took me a loooong time to get it to a decent level. Made up of double-stops exclusively, good intonation is elusive. Also, you require good bow control in order to bring out both notes nicely at all times. As you may all know by now this project consists of me tackling the Popper High School Etudes and recording them on vi...

www.SebastianDiezig.com - No. 8 is tricky as most other Popper High School Etudes so far. The temptation is great to focus on the left hand only since it is very demanding in that respect (by the way: it is also quite exhausting for the left). But it is just as important to take care of smooth string crossings with the bow because this piece might not sound good otherwise.

www.SebastianDiezig.com - While Popper 7 doesn't tend to cause pain in the hands like other etudes from this author I found it difficult to achieve good intonation because of the many shiftings through virtually all available positions. The other difficulty is in the bow where one has to be economic for those long slurs. Popper's etudes may be less beautiful than the Piatti Caprices but the mor...

www.SebastianDiezig.com - David Popper's 6th etude of his "High School of Cello playing" is perhaps my favorite so far. It is a pleasant, fast, and effective piece with lots of notes. On the other hand I know of no other piece that tires the muscles of both left hand and left underarm so thoroughly after already one page, yet there is one more page to go with some highly delicate spots that nee...

www.SebastianDiezig.com - Technically, Popper No. 5 is trickier than one would assume at first glance. Also, as often the case with Popper, one needs to add an extra-dose of musical intention in order to make the piece sound less like a technical exercise. By the way, this quirky little piece was not easy to memorize. On a more interesting note, this etude quotes from Saint-Saëns cello concerto...

www.SebastianDiezig.com - Popper's fourth etude is probably one of the harder ones. I had to be extra careful with my tendons while practicing this nasty little piece because it requires you to use your left hand in unnatural positions a lot of the time. What's more there’s a good amount of quick position changes all over the fingerboard in this etude which makes perfect intonation pretty hard ...

www.SebastianDiezig.com - Poppers third etude from his "high school of cello playing" is not so difficult, the biggest challenge being to play it from memory. Musically one needs to invest oneself fully though because it is somewhat repetitive and could come across as a little boring if no special effort was made. The Popper Experience is the follow-up-project to the Piatti Project, which took ...

Bravo!!
wow just wow
Bravo Sebastian. Die Fingergriffe sind unglaublich.
Hallo Michael und danke für deinen Kommentar! Liebe Grüsse, S.
Magnifique! :)
I am in Julliard pre college, learning popper. Your vids always help a lot. Thanks
He’s back!
As always, you sound amazing! Great playing
Сегодня сыграла на гос экзамене в два раза быстрее.. Это была огромная ошибка
Your ability to maintain such strong pronation in the right arm is quite impressive.
This was so difficult for me, you make it look so possible and easy! I would like to know what combo of strings do you use? It sounds very crispy and clear.
The A and D are Larsen Standard strong. The C and G are Thomastik Spirocore Wolfram medium.
Another song to practice 👍
Nice!!!!!! Brave soul
Thank you for this resource.
I enjoy your playing. 😊
I bought the sheet music as a gift for my girlfriend. She is learning the first variation and part of the second right now. With time, probably years, she will try to learn all of them. Her cello teacher was very enthusiastic about the piece. It can be a good learning piece for years to come. Like reaching a new level when you can play a new variation.
I am glad she likes the piece and wish her a good learning experience.
@MrCellissimo she's having a lot of fun learning more and more variations. I was listening yesterday in her cello lesson. It is getting better and better. Now she has to put more feeling in, like you are doing in your performance. Not just technical play of the piece.
Вроде бы просто этюд, а хочется слушать. Вы любите виолончель и хорошо исполняете. Спасибо.
Wow
very nice! one of the hardest Popper etudes
you rock, man!
좀 치네
beautiful!
It looks so easy 😭😭
I mean if you practice it 🤷♀️
The masked quartet. Can you tell who's behind the mask?
is the a revised or edited edition
Another great player who does not play the piece as written. The lower notes are eighths while the upper ones are sixteenths. It's supposed to be a study in partial double stops.
Thanks for commenting. I am not sure about your interpretation because for you to be right there would need to be slurs. In my opinion the eighth notes are there because one is supposed to bring out this lower voice.
@@MrCellissimo That's one view certainly, but the way it's written, there are two parts, the lower one in eighth notes and the upper in sixteenths. There's nothing to "slur" because they don't intersect or combine. This is not to take away from your performance, of course. But you're playing it as if there was just one voice, all in sixteenths.
Protopopova, not Protopova. The root of this surname in "protopop" - "archpriest".
Ok, thanks
OMG 👏🏻
I am doing this I am 10 years old and in Julliard and this is really hard Nice technique, 😅
Beautiful performance. Not only what we hear, but what we see too.
Joshua roman better
What a wonderful Borodin. This Beethoven is also great.ua-cam.com/video/cGcVhCOZyok/v-deo.html
any tips for the large string crossings at the 0:25 mark? you play it very cleanly!
Practise slowly, close to the frog and use little bow, stick to the strings (don't lift the bow at all).
I've been looking forward to this one!!
Omfg good to see you back!!!!!!! Your videos help me so much with my poppers hahaha youre a legend!
Super great!
Nice to see you uploading again! Looking forward to hearing the rest of the etudes :)
bravissimo!!!
